These days, and as we look toward the future, we need our homes to be places of peaceful sanctuary where we feel safe and restful. A place where we are able to rejuvenate our energy and thrive for family, work, learning and playing. What better time for 7 tips to make your home a peaceful sanctuary?
Even as many of us return to traditional offices and schools, working, education, exercising and recreation will definitely continue to be enjoyed and performed from home. What type of home will make you the most comfortable? How can we improve our energy and rejuvenate ourselves in our homes?
Having a peaceful sanctuary has a huge impact on our outlook on life.
Safety, organization, color (vibration), beauty, and comfort all play a role in creating sanctuary and refuge that is unique to you and your loved ones. We all want our home environment to enhance our well-being and neutralize the daily stressors. For instance, a tidy home helps create a stress-free sanctuary. It also helps to strive for a feeling, not a “look,” when decorating.
Here are 7 tips to make your home a peaceful sanctuary:
#1. Simplicity is Key to Peace
To keep the energy moving freely it is best to keep clutter at a minimum. For example, clean up messy areas. Eliminate clutter. Have as much open space in the room as possible.
Decluttering your kitchen can help visually and really open it up!

Home organizing systems for what you have decided to keep will increase your storage areas and (most importantly) open up space.
#2. Make a Room Light and Airy
Dark rooms can feel more depressing and heavy. Light and airy rooms can be created with clean and very light colored walls. Even small splashes of color really pop and add excitement.
Color can evoke a feeling. Every color has a unique influence!
- Orange represents enthusiasm.
- Blue represents calm.
- Green represents abundance.
- Yellow represents optimism.

#3. Make a Home that Comforts You!
Reflect your idea of comfort! Decide which feeling you want to surround yourself with – happy, light, calm, serene … then choose furniture and color to create that feeling and pull it all together. It helps to create intriguing surroundings with a few unique treasures which calm you, such as photos of family, small sculptures, crystals and art.
Declutter, clean and light your entry area to help with the flow of energy as people come into your home.

#4. Embrace the Peacefulness of Open Areas
For me, open areas create a sense of space and peaceful sanctuary rather than the closed-in feeling. An open area in the living room is more inviting. This space can also be used for floor exercises, a play area for children, floor activities with friends and family such as games or craft projects (if they’re not super messy).
Pretty, cozy floor pillows stored in a corner, under a bed, or in a closet, can be used in this open area for meditation, prayer, a social circle for adult groups, or play groups with children. Check out the price on Amazon!
For example, to add even more peace in your sanctuary, create open areas outdoors to commune with nature!
For total party relaxation, we chose outdoor section furniture…bring the gathering outside! (of course, a paradise setting is optional!). Check out how reasonable this set is on Amazon!
#5 Home Organizing Systems for Making Space
What will you do with all your stuff?
From my experience, there are five options that come to mind:
- Sell it!
- Donate it!
- Store it!
- Dump it (least favorable of all) or
- Hire a home organizer.
Selling is easier now than ever before!
Online selling platforms like Shopify, Amazon, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, eBay or Nextdoor are easy to use.
Donating your items in good condition feels good because you have a sense of helping others.
There are donation centers like Goodwill, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and many local donation establishments can be found easily online.
Home organizing storage units and shelving allow you to use existing storage space more efficiently.
Closets, the area underneath beds, linen closets, storage tables and benches, attics, basements, kitchen cabinets and garages will give you opportunities to declutter, reorganize and store your stuff in new ways.
A simple tip for storage is “go under or up, not sideways”!
My favorite for “under” storage? Under the beds! There are a variety of reasons one of the least used storage areas are under the beds! For me, it is because I can’t see under there and it can be difficult to retrieve things once they are stored…NO MORE!
After a long search, I found these under bed storage containers that have strong handles (for dragging them out), enhanced zippers (no tearing) and best of all – they are breathable, so no worries about moister build up. Great for shoes, toys, comforters…and because of the clear front “window” you can SEE what treasures you have hidden! Check out the price for a set of two on Amazon!
In terms of “up” storage (or going OVER things), the space over the back of the toilet is often completely unused! This bathroom shelf over the toilet is a great space saver! Check out the price on Amazon!
Do you have piles of papers lying around? A filing cabinet can solve that problem.
The reason why so many of us “stack” papers is because we recognize they are important…often we are afraid of putting them someplace and not being able to find them when needed (yes, the voice of experience here)!
An excellent solution to make your home an even more peaceful sanctuary: cut the clutter and the stacks with a pretty, non-industrial looking filing cabinet!
This beauty comes with the ability to lock ALL three drawers with the turn of one key! Keep the prying eyes guessing! Check out the price on Amazon!
There are many great home storage organizers on Amazon. Enjoy searching for all your storage needs.
If your resources allow, hire a home organizer. They can help you make a peaceful sanctuary in several ways.
A home organizer can help you decide what to let go of and what to keep. By simply asking the hard questions (“when did you last touch this?” or “how does this item make you feel?”). A home organizer can make the whole process so much easier for the disposal, donation or the selling of your belongings.
#6. Decorate with Nature in Mind
Being around nature is very calming. To create a peaceful home sanctuary close to nature there are large and small plants you can place around for reminders of the serenity nature brings to your spirit.
One thing I have learned (the hard way), certain plants do better than others indoors…check out this post from My Domaine.com for 15 Gorgeous Houseplants That Will Thrive in Your Living Room!
Nature images by artists are intriguing and create curiosity.
Visitors ask questions like, “Who created that painting?” “What is the story behind the painting and the artist?” A landscape or seascape scene provides distance in any room. They are similar to windows in the way of giving the audience a beautiful distant view.
Research shows having nature artworks around can be very therapeutic and relaxing. If you appreciate the very famous artist, Claude Monet, then here is a beautiful nature scene to bring peace to your home sanctuary. Check out the price on Amazon for a stretched canvas print!
…and of course, there is Vincent van Gogh. Vincent painted so many famous paintings. People love his colors and the movement in his pieces. Here is a very reasonably priced poster print of one of his amazing cherry blossom paintings. It is offered in different sizes and either framed, matted or laminated. Check out the price on Amazon!
Vincent seemed to instinctively understand that lavender is considered a high vibrational color which represents tranquility. If you would like to learn more about the power of colors, check out my post on Raising your vibration using high vibrational colors
#7 Sage to Cleanse the Air of Negative Energy
Native Americans have performed the ritual of burning Sage (smudging) for centuries to cleanse a space of negative energy. A favorite smudging kit of mine includes Sage, a Smudging feather, Palo Santo wood sticks, Amethyst and Rose Quartz crystals, an Abalone shell (with stand), and a Chakra Bracelet.
It also comes with an instruction booklet and blessings. Everything you will need! This kit contains sustainably harvested Sage and Palo Santo wood. Check out the price on Amazon!
I hope you enjoy creating a beautiful, peaceful home sanctuary for yourself, your family and your friends!
Many blessings and kindest thoughts,
Cindy
