Within 5 minutes you can make a homemade DIY mosquito repellent that will help keep the pesky rascals away! This DIY insect repellent is safe for kids and adults and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals.

Let’s agree there is nothing more enjoyable than being outdoors…and really no worse “buzz kill” than mosquitos joining the party!

As testimony to their emotionally destructive power, I humbly quote the Dalai Lama:  “If you think you are too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent the night with a mosquito.”

Easy 5 Minute Homemade Mosquito Repellent

When the sun begins to set in our great state, the mosquitos locate your party and attack in formation…so, rather than slather my loved ones daily with chemicals, I went to work researching a homemade mosquito repellent that was loaded with natural essential oils.

My search ended with Kendra Benson’s exceptional post on Our Paleo Life.com!

A great combination of Witch Hazel and Essential Oils…blended in minutes to create a light, safe and easy to apply spray…BAM!  No more Mosquitos!  Spray this natural insect repellent on, go out and enjoy your day (and evening).

When to use this DIY Mosquito Repellent

  • At the park
  • Working in the Garden
  • Outside at events
  • BBQ’s and Parties
  • At the lake or pool
  • Playing in the yard with kids
  • Or any other time you are going to be outdoors for an extended time frame

A Quick note…so what Is Going On With DEET?

When I was researching bug spray (especially to ward off ticks), I noticed many included DEET in the ingredients (chemical name: N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide) .  Honestly, if we are going into an area known to have ticks, I will reluctantly use products that include DEET.  All in all, however, I avoid it…mostly due to the  mixed reviews on the safety of using any bug spray that contains DEET.

Witch Hazel and Essential Oils needed for Mosquito repellent!

A fast trip to Sprouts or Whole Foods and you are 5 minutes from keeping mosquitos away!

Materials

  • 6 oz Witch Hazel
  • 20 drops Citronella Essential Oil
  • 20 drops Lemongrass Essential Oil
  • 15 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 15 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • 10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Tools

  • 3 (2 oz) Dark Glass Spray Bottles
  • Funnel

Instructions

Combine witch hazel and all essential oils in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid (I like to use a Ball canning jar). Twist the lid on tightly and shake vigorously to combine all the oils together.

Place the funnel in the opening of one of the 2 oz glass bottles and pour in the mosquito repellent almost to the top, leaving room for the tub on the sprayer top. Twist the cap on the spray bottle on tightly. Repeat with the remaining 2 bottles.

Store in a cool dark place until ready to use.

Shake gently before use and spray liberally on all exposed skin and on clothing to repel mosquitoes and other insects.

As always, you get what you pay for…I recommend purchasing quality essential oil products (like “NOW” which I found at Sprouts).  Each of the essential oils in this mix present unique properties, so stay true to Kendra Benson’s exceptional blend!

It’s a 5 Minute DIY Mosquito Repellent that works!

Not only is the recipe made in only minutes but it WORKS!   Spray on your beloveds and keep the buzz-killing mosquitos away!
